Creativity remains my oldest and truest friend. It has toddled alongside me through such times as my kindergarten phase noire, a period when I colored everything black, which prompted my teacher to call my mother to discuss the troubling implications. During a Christmas choir concert early in elementary school, an improvised vaudevillian dance (complete with hand gestures) resulted in my music teacher parting children in the risers like Moses and the Red Sea to scold me for my forbidden choreography.
Consequentially, I learned a very valuable lesson quite early in life; even if my creative decisions weren’t always supported, taking a creative risk is always worthwhile. I have always loved drawing, and my passion for visual arts is perhaps the first one I ever had. As I made my way through school, my interest in writing, theater, and violin performance grew. These additional pastimes lent themselves to my own ideas surrounding visual art and the creative process.
By high school, I pursued my creative passion and enrolled in as many visual art classes as possible. My work was featured and recognized in several local and regional art competitions. Paired with my other passion, namely the French language, I was able to earn scholarships towards my college education.
My undergraduate art education was comprehensive; courses in silk screen, fibers/textiles, sculpture, and video art were among my most beloved. While working in a hospitality job post-graduation, I continued to sketch and photograph my surroundings, trying to unearth from within myself a style and an artistic vision. After being hired as a cabin crew member for a major airline, the world became smaller and smaller, yet my inspiration was boundless. My style has continued to develop from 2016 onward, and many of the pieces featured in my portfolio are inspired by my travels to France, Switzerland and Belgium, as well as my time living in the Bay Area.
If there is anything I can conclude about my journey with art, it’s that it feels exciting and new, yet familiar and warm every day. Although I currently moonlight as an artist (depending on which time zone I am in), I hope to eventually prioritize my creativity, and let it guide me through both my avocational and professional life.
